Week 12 – PLNs and EME 6414

 

EME 6414 has created a PLNs through the following methods:

 

·           Personalised learning. Students have had the opportunity to choose readings relative to their interests and the opportunity to engage with discussion topics that they relate to. Students have also had the opportunity to engage with assignments in manner that suits them relative to the level of exploration relating to social media platforms and concepts.

·           Collaboration. The EME 6414 methodology has driven collaboration through the following methods; weekly discussions, weekly blogging and the opportunity to reflect on one’s weekly engagement through the submission of a weekly Participation Log.

·           Flexibility. The subject has provided a high degree of flexibility that has also encouraged informal learning through the following means; opportunities to respond to assignment in different ways, flexibility with regard to weekly discussion topic engagement and the option to engage with optional activities such as Peer Badge activities.

·           Multi-platform. EME 6414 has applied multiple platforms to encourage collaboration (i.e. blogs, CANVAS discussions). The subject methodology has also promoted the use of a range of other platforms to encourage engagement through the introduction of weekly tools and activities linked to social media platforms such as Instagram.

    Hi MJW,

    As I prepared my final PLN paper I also had to include the people, spaces, and tools that I've had access to in the FSU ISLT program. I like how you've narrowed this down to our course and it reminds about how PLNs are personal, flexible, connect people, and use different tools and platforms.

  There was a strong focus this week on informal and formal learning for me. The beauty of social media platforms is that offer opportunities for both depending on the target audience, context, triggers for learning and the objectives of the learning activity. The functionality of social media platforms is powerful in terms of addressing a range of leaning needs; however, it also requires skills operators who can select the right platform and structure the learning content coherent (relative to the platform) in order to achieve the stated objectives.

Week 4: Reflection

I learnt a few new things this week relative to digital badges, crowdsourcing and tagging. I think they all have utility relative to online learning environments and they are certainly reflective of Web2.0 technologies. I think both crowdsourcing and tagging can be applied effectively to establish useful links between individuals that can then lead to deeper understanding and a broader context for the application of critical thinking skills.

Entry 1 – Web 2.0

  Entry 1 – Web 2.0   From what I understand at this stage (early doors), Web 2.0 is characterised by interactive sites and platforms that facilitate participation, collaboration and content creation. Web 1.0 technologies (i.e., static websites) provided limited functionality that supported interaction. Web 2.0 has a focus on the generation and sharing of content through aligned platforms (i.e., blogs, wikis). Other characteristics include: the hosting of content via cloud based services; real time interaction; and the sharing of media.
